The History of Dental Implants

November 30, 2017Dr. Pawel ZajacDental Implants

Did you know dental implants have existed for several hundred years? Unbeknownst to many individuals, dental implants have been around for centuries with their invention dating back to 2000 BC! Despite their early invention, dental implants didn’t become a popular and modern restorative method until the 19th century.

Who Made Dental Implants First?

The invention of dental implants can’t solely be credited to one specific group. In fact, before technology was even invented, everyone from the Chinese to the Egyptians took revolutionary steps in the development of dental implants using limited and simple tools. Others who contributed to the invention and development of dental implants include Etruscans, Celts, Romans, Phoenicians, and Mayans.

The First Materials Used

Nowadays, dental implants are made out of titanium. This biocompatible metal is not susceptible to decay and bonds well with the jawbone – creating a strong foundation for the prosthetic tooth, much like a natural tooth root. Although we have these modern materials which have helped make dental implants extremely successful, early inventors tested different objects to fill in missing gaps in the smile.

Some objects used as dental implants included, animal teeth, bamboo pegs, iron, copper, gold, and even went as far as using human cadaver teeth or teeth from underprivileged donors. In order to secure these in place, early inventors used gold wires to secure teeth and even went as far as creating bridges!
