At Zajac Dental, we’ve designed the dental implant process to be centered around you. Giving you the information you need to make the best decisions about your care is part of that process. Read on as we give you an overview of what you can expect during the dental implant process at our Oakville practice.
Your Initial Consultation with Dr. Zajac
The first step in the dental implant process is a consultation with Dr. Zajac. When you meet with him, you’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions you have about the dental implant process. He’ll explain all of the tooth replacement options that are available so you can decide which is the best solution.
You’ll also have a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, and jawbone so Dr. Zajac can create a treatment plan, individualized to your goals and needs.
Your Customized Treatment Plan
With the information gathered during your initial consultation, Dr. Zajac will create your treatment plan which may include:
- Supplemental Procedures – Supplemental procedures are designed to prepare your teeth, gums, and jawbone for dental implant placement. This may include gum disease treatment, bone grafting, and other preliminary treatments to improve the short and long-term outcome of your dental implants.
- Dental Implant Placement – You’ll have your implants placed once any necessary supplemental procedures are complete. Some patients may have a restoration attached the same day their implants are placed. In other cases, Dr. Zajac may determine that an additional healing period will be beneficial.
- Healing Period – Whether you have your restorations attached immediately after implant placement or later on, the healing period is extremely important. It’s during this time that the process of osseointegration occurs, in which the jawbone fuses with the implant, forming a secure foundation for your restoration.
- Tooth Restoration – If you didn’t have your restoration attached during your implant placement procedure, you’ll return to have it placed once Dr. Zajac determines you have fully healed and osseointegration has successfully taken place. This is when your final, permanent crown, multi-tooth restoration, or full-arch denture will be attached to your implants.
I Have Dental Implants — Now What?
Once your dental implant procedure is complete, Dr. Zajac will provide information on proper care and maintenance. Luckily, caring for your implants isn’t difficult. In fact, it’s the same routine you already follow for cleaning your natural teeth, including flossing once a day and brushing twice a day. Frequently Asked Questions
Does it hurt to get dental implants?
Your dentist will apply a local anesthetic to ensure you don’t feel any sort of discomfort while inserting your dental implants. At most, you may feel some pressure during the treatment, but you can continue with your day-to-day lifestyle immediately afterward. Any sensitivity you may have after your dental implant surgery is manageable with prescribed medication.
Are there any side effects after dental implant surgery?
Most patients experience some mild discomfort after undergoing dental implant surgery. However, this usually only lasts one to two weeks depending on how many of your teeth were replaced. Common symptoms you may have after surgery include bleeding, swelling, bruising, and slight pain. These symptoms are often easy to address, but it’s recommended you reach out to your dentist if side effects continue to persist after a couple of weeks.
How can I help make the most of my dental implants?
Make the most out of your dental implants by taking proper care of them. While your dental crown may need to be replaced every 15 years due to normal wear and tear, you can make this even longer by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily. Be sure to also schedule your visit to the dentist every six months for routine cleanings and exams.
Are there risks with getting dental implants?
There are very few risks associated with dental implant surgery as long as your procedure is conducted by a qualified implant dentist. Dental implants have a success rate of around 95 percent. To reduce the risk of infection or injury during the healing period, follow the aftercare instructions provided to you by your dentist.
